Seize The Moment-"Leo"
Leo was born March 1st 2010 out of a Kiger Mustang stallion and Thoroughbred mare in North Carolina. Sire is Tesoro De Mi Corazon who was wild caught by the BLM as a 3yo. Tesoro is very easy going and confident around people despite being a wild horse. One night a storm passed through and blew down a tree which knocked out part of the fenceline. 11 months later there was a surprise foal in the field next to the mare that was thought to been carrying a half appaloosa foal! Born on the first, and the first foal from Tesoro, the foal was originally named "Uno". As a weanling he was purchased by a wonderful horseman in Northern Virginia and his name was changed to Corazon De Picaro, meaning "heart of a rogue", rather fitting for his birth story. His new owner started his basic training. Leading, lunging, manners, desensitizing, etc. After life got in the way he was put up for sale where I (Meagan) snatched him up right away as a 2yo! I was friends with the second owner, and through her became friends with the breeder and had watched him grow in photos from just a day old. I loved him and his playful personality, along with my dream of wanting a buckskin sport horse ($$$), I begged my then husband to let me purchase him. Surprisingly (he's not a horse person) he said yes even though I was 4 months pregnant and already had two horses. I was ecstatic when I brought home this scraggly little sour patch kid.
Leo was hard for me to name, registered name was easy, barn name....eh, not so much. Seize the Moment is a phrase that I hold dear to me because its the way my grandmother lived her life. She passed soon after I bought Leo, so that name was a given. Champ, Ace, Levi, Zephyr, Remi, Jubilee, Quest (<- I really liked this one!!! Everyone else not as much) all had their go. Finally, after many months of debating and trials, it was settled on Leo since that would be the zodiac sign of my soon to be born son. After awhile it seemed quite fitting. Nice manly name with a playful side to it. Perfect.
Early training with Leo, while I was pregnant, was quite the breeze. He is extremely intelligent and very willing to please and do his job. He was full of random shenanigans, rearing and leaping from time to time, but always settled quickly into his work and impressed me with every session. I could go weeks, months even, without touching him and pull him out of the field and he was just as good as when he'd worked several days a week. After having my son I started Leos under saddle training. Like everything else, he took to it easily and quickly. The training had been scattered and random, yet he still improved with each ride. Over the years Leo has had sparatic training. He seemed to always go through a growth spurt right as training was progressing, so I would then give him the time off. Then life got in the way for awhile too.
Life in 2017 is resuming a new normal, and that includes getting back to horses! So far Leo is doing EXCEPTIONAL in so many ways. He has really improved mentally and hes almost done growing (hes really growing late!) so his under saddle work is finally full swing ahead. I can not wait to see what this boy has to offer!
